ThrowBack Thursday: Deep machine (UK)

Deep Machine were an East London heavy metal band formed in 1979, emerging from the early Nwobhm movement with a sound rooted in Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. Despite strong local support, widely traded demo tapes and a reputation for high‑energy shows, they remained underground during their original run and split in early 1984.

Across their shifting line‑ups, members later appeared in Angel Witch, Tokyo Blade, Rogue Male and other key Nwobhm‑era acts. Founder Bob Hooker notably placed in the top three during an Iron Maiden guitar audition in 1979, reflecting the band’s close ties to the scene.

Deep Machine reunited in 2009 and finally entered the studio, releasing Whispers in the Black (2012) and their full‑length Rise of the Machine (2014) through High Roller Records. Their final release, the single Ascension from Ignorance / Cyber Strike, arrived in 2015.

On the 9th of October 2015, the band announced their split for practical and financial reasons. A final track, “Child Soldier”, was written and partly recorded with Veronica Freeman on vocals and Russell Gilbrook of Uriah Heep on drums, but never released. One or more members were also involved in the Nwobhm/hard‑rock band KHZ.

Active in several phases (1979–1984, 1988, 2009–2015), Deep Machine remain a cult name within Nwobhm, remembered for their raw demos, turbulent history and enduring underground legacy.
