Throw Back Thursday: A II Z (UK)

A-11-Z emerged from Manchester in 1978 when brothers Gary and Dave Owens teamed up with Karl Reti, later joined by Throw Back Thursday: A-II-Z (UK) celebrates one of Manchester’s most energetic contributions to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Formed in 1978, A II Z (UK) emerged when brothers Gary and Dave Owens joined forces with Karl Reti, later bringing in Cam Campbell and eventually Tony Backhouse. Their roots in Manchester’s rock scene shaped a sound that was raw, fast and unmistakably NWOBHM.

The band’s early months were spent writing relentlessly and performing at self‑promoted gigs across the city. Their determination led them to record a demo at Smile Studios, a tape that—through a stroke of luck—found its way to Polydor Records. This resulted in a deal for an album and two singles, launching A II Z (UK) into the national spotlight.

Their debut live album “The Witch of Berkely” captured the band’s explosive stage presence and secured them early NWOBHM tour dates with Iron Maiden. Momentum continued with the red‑vinyl EP “No Fun After Midnight”, briefly banned by Radio 1 yet topping heavy‑metal charts and earning them a major tour with Black Sabbath. They later released the Russ Ballard‑written single “I’m the One Who Loves You”, recorded at Red Bus Studios with producer Andy Scott.

Despite chart success and high‑profile tours, the band split in 1982 due to contractual and financial pressures. Still, A II Z (UK) remain an important part of Britain’s heavy‑metal heritage, remembered for their intensity, independence and unforgettable live energy.
