The legendary Roxy Theatre on the Sunset Strip, one of the most renowned music venues in the world, became the setting for an unforgettable night in 2024. Metal icons CIRITH UNGOL took the stage for a one-night-only event, celebrating the release of their 2023 album, Dark Parade. The band delivered a powerhouse performance, playing Dark Parade from start to finish, along with fan-favorite anthems like “Join The Legion,” “Frost And Fire,” “Black Machine,” and “Atom Smasher.” The electrifying show was immortalized in an outstanding live album and DVD, capturing the band at their peak.
For CIRITH UNGOL, there was no better place than the Roxy Theatre to capture this monumental live recording. “It’s owned by Hollywood music legend Lou Adler,” says co-founding drummer Rob Garven. “Being right next to the iconic Rainbow Bar & Grill, the Roxy is part of a legacy that also includes the Whisky and the now-lost Starwood. Every time we played one of these historic venues, it was a special moment. Seeing so many friends and fans from across the world made this night even more unforgettable.”
Bassist Jarvis Leatherby adds, “Back in 1984, an underground bootleg recording titled Cirith Ungol, Live at the Roxy became legendary among fans. It only felt right to return to the same stage 40 years later and finally document a live show in a way the band could truly be proud of. This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Metal Blade Records, the Adlers, Nanotear, and Goldenvoice.”
Live at the Roxy stands alongside some of the greatest live albums ever recorded. “Live at Leeds by The Who is an absolute powerhouse, Mountain released some incredible live records, and Uriah Heep Live from 1973 is another standout,” Garven reflects. “Capturing the energy and emotion of a live show is no easy task, but I believe Live at the Roxy does just that.”
Set for release on April 25th via Metal Blade Records, the album is preceded by a glimpse of the electrifying event with live footage of “Down Below.”
“This song, woven together with a haunting acoustic intro, is a gift to all of you on this doomed planet,” Garven shares. “It represents the suffering we all endured—from the pandemic, the loss, the isolation, the canceled shows, and the deprivation of everything we love. It features some of my best drumming and one of [guitarist] Jimmy [Barraza]’s most powerful solos. As it builds to its final, explosive crescendo, all that emotion is unleashed in a maelstrom of metal chaos.”
