Stormwind emerged from Düsseldorf’s underground in 1980, built around a tight circle of young musicians who were determined to carve out their own place in Germany’s heavy metal landscape. What began as a small after‑school project quickly grew into a serious endeavour as the founding trio — Niko Arvanitis, Rudy Kronenberger and Olly Kliem — started shaping a sound that leaned into sharp riffs, driving rhythms and a clear affection for the rising European metal movement.
The group spent its early years experimenting with line‑ups and direction, gradually refining their identity until a solid formation finally took shape in the early 1980s. With the arrival of Wolla Böhm and vocalist Klaus Lemm, Stormwind gained the stability and presence they needed to push forward. By 1984 they were performing live, bringing a raw, energetic stage presence that earned them a loyal local following.
Their momentum culminated in 1985 with the release of Taken by Storm, a full‑length record that captured the band’s intensity and ambition. The same year saw the appearance of the Warbringer EP, further cementing their reputation among collectors of German heavy metal. Although internal changes and outside opportunities began to pull the members in different directions, Stormwind continued to write and record, leaving behind a small but distinctive catalogue. By the late 1980s the project had run its course, and the band quietly dissolved in 1988.
“Burning Wheels” was released in 2018 as part of the Heavy Metal Classics series, combining unreleased material from Stormwind’s abandoned 1985 album with tracks from the Warbringer EP and two later recordings from 2004. The EP tracks were originally recorded in July 1985 at Studio Joswigstudio in Düsseldorf.
Despite their brief lifespan, Stormwind’s work has continued to resurface among enthusiasts of the era, with tracks like “Warbringer” finding new life on modern archival compilations. Their legacy sits firmly within the fabric of Germany’s 1980s metal scene — a snapshot of youthful ambition, regional identity and the restless creativity of the time.
