Review: Mega Colossus – “Watch out!”

Release Date: Out Now

Label: Cruz Del Sur Music

On the eastern edge of the United States, North Carolina takes the full force of the Atlantic from storms, salt air, and the restless pull of the Gulf Stream. The people who call it home tend to be sturdy, practical, and quietly adventurous. The state motto, “To be, rather than to seem,” isn’t just a slogan; it’s a way of moving through the world. Formed in 2005, Mega Colossus fit that ethos without trying. It’s simply who they are.

Their lineup has held steady since 2021: Sean Buchanan (vocals), Chris Millard (guitar), Bill Fisher (guitar), Anthony Micale (bass), and Doza Mendoza (drums). They don’t waste time on image or attitude. Their mission is straightforward: deliver songs that hit the mind, body, and spirit with equal force. Their music leans into big adventures, larger‑than‑life stories, and the kind of celebratory energy that comes from playing loud with your friends (it tracks that Sean also writes science fiction.) The look stays simple: long hair, dark jeans, leather jackets. And when the show’s over, they’re the type of band that will grab a drink with you. Community isn’t a marketing angle for them; it’s the engine that keeps everything moving.

That approach has carried them far. Across nine releases, steady touring, and a healthy run of festival appearances, they’ve built a loyal following. Their 2026 calendar includes European festivals and club dates across multiple countries. You can hear the lineage, Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy, all with a streak of punk grit, but they’re not beholden to any one influence. They’ve carved out a sound that’s recognizably theirs.

This grounded, no‑nonsense work ethic has earned them a respected place in the New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal underground. They live their truth, just like the motto of their home state suggests.

With their new album Watch Out! (released March 6, 2026 via Cruz Del Sur Music), Mega Colossus are setting the stage for a strong year ahead.  It will be one built on the same principles that got them here: honesty, energy, and a good time shared with anyone willing to join in.

REVIEW

“The Bad Thing” kicks the album off like a warning flare. A soaring twin‑guitar overture stretches out for a full ninety seconds, setting a tense, cinematic mood. It is almost like the camera pulling back to reveal the vast expanse of a fantasy world and the lurking tales of adventure. Then, without ceremony or mercy, the song discharges like a firebolt. The tempo snaps into high gear, the drums hammer forward, and the bass line bounces with a momentum that refuses to let up. The twin‑axe attack becomes a full assault, firing off riffs that are both lightning‑fast and sky‑high. Sean’s vocals cut through the charge with quick, sharp, and relentless energy. Though, the music is like riding the wave rather than trying to tame it.

The second track, “Battlefront”, arrives like a banner unfurled over a field of unending conflict. It wastes no time, charging straight into a tale of steel, enemies, and war‑scarred ground. The subject matter is grim, but the delivery is anything but mournful. This is a rallying cry, a hymn meant to stiffen spines and send the line forward! As the tension mounts, Sean unleashes a soaring high note that feels like a signal flare cutting through fog of war, a moment designed to lift the troops before the clash. The solo that follows is controlled chaos there are dives, shrieks, and sharp‑edged phrases that twist through the air with purpose. By the time the final notes land, there’s no doubt where this story is headed. The forces of evil don’t stand a chance.

“Tag in Your Friend” opens with another soaring twin‑guitar lead and is the kind that raises the stakes. Almost immediately, the track snaps into a breakneck pace and refuses to ease up. What follows is an anthemic, pulse‑pounding sprint built around a tale of tense combat, shifting momentum, and the kind of in the ring rivalry that forges unlikely camaraderie. The lyrics paint the scene with sharp, kinetic imagery where fighters are circling, allies are stepping in, and opponents are driven back. It’s the spirit of the contest that drives the song: the grit, the teamwork, the thrill of pushing past the breaking point. This one puts you in the right with them.

The next song is built for the taverns and inns of the realm. “Good Hunting” is an anthem best enjoyed with a frothy mug lifted and the taste of victory still fresh. From the first chorus, it feels like one of the record’s standout moments: rousing, communal, and tailor‑made for a crowd of thirsty club‑goers shouting every line back at the stage. Midway through, the song takes a sharp left turn into a Queensrÿche‑style spoken‑word passage, paired with a tempo shift that momentarily pulls the listener out of the revelry. It’s a brief, theatrical breather before the band charges straight back into the fray, louder and more triumphant than before. This gem is an ode to celebration, camaraderie, and the kind of hard‑won triumph that tastes even better when shared.

With “Halls of Mystikos,” the album takes a turn inward. The track opens with a soft, reflective guitar line, soon joined by a shimmering counterpart that lifts the melody into something almost otherworldly. As the arrangement builds, it becomes clear that this isn’t a detour, or a descent, into a deeper narrative vein. This is a tale of high adventure and fantasy, told through a metal lens that gives every image weight and momentum. The vocals, guitars, and rhythm section all rise together, each part reinforcing the sense of scale and wonder. Everything feels unified, as if the band locked into a single breath and pushed forward as one. It’s a standout moment on the record as an expansive, fully realized journey that proves how far Mega Colossus can go when they lean into their talents.

“Here Lies You” opens with an old‑world tone, where acoustic lines and a weathered melody feel like they’ve been carried across generations. The song walks a quieter path, reflecting on torch‑lit taverns, shared victories, hard losses, and the stories we leave behind. Beneath the warmth, though, is a sharper truth: life is fleeting, and the road we travel is temporary. What endures are the deeds we carve into the world while we’re here. The track leans into that message with clarity and heart, urging listeners to fight hard, drink well, and live fully, because glory outlasts the body that chased it. It’s a reflective moment on the record, but one that hits with the weight of a lesson well learned.

To close the album, “Bloodless” is a clear reminder of what Mega Colossus do best. It’s a tale of an evil force rising and the resolve required to stand against it. Battles are won and lost with bravery, grit, and the unseen powers that guide heroes to their fate. The tempo here is deliberate, measured, almost ceremonial, a contrast to the high‑speed assaults earlier in the record. Rather than slowing the momentum, that restraint gives the song weight. It shows the band’s range and their ability to shift from breakneck fury to something more controlled without losing intensity or purpose. As a final chapter, “Bloodless” feels like the last stand in a long campaign, a steady march toward triumph that seals the album with conviction.

Conclusion

Across the record, Mega Colossus delivers an experience that’s both epic in scope and refreshingly free of pretense. The songs move with purpose with a lean, direct, and built for maximum impact approach. Yet, there’s an undeniable charm in the way the band approaches their craft. The lyrics carry anthemic weight, delivered with a sincerity that makes every tale of battle, magic, and myth feel lived‑in rather than imagined.

The production value only sharpens that effect. Everything is clear, punchy, and balanced, allowing the twin‑guitar heroics, driving rhythms, and soaring vocals to shine without ever overwhelming the listener. It’s the kind of clarity that lets the band’s strengths speak for themselves.

Taken as a whole, “Watch Out!” is a testament to what Mega Colossus does best… singing of battles fought, realms forgotten, evil confronted, and the fantastical worlds that live just beyond the edge of the map. But woven through all the swordplay and sorcery is a reminder of something more grounded, that celebration, camaraderie, and a bit of self‑awareness are the keys to happiness, whether in this realm or the next.

As a reviewer, I could try and dig deep to find something constructive to offer or a flaw to critique. After several careful listens, there’s nothing substantive for me to pick on. It’s a fantastic record, built with tremendous potential to ignite live audiences. With this release, the band shows not just capability, but purpose and maturity… which is a clear step forward on their path toward something truly great.

Hit their socials, find their live performances, and celebrate with them. It’s bound to be time well spent!
