Forlorn Hope is a heavy metal band from Merseyside that masterfully blends history with metal to create epic musical experiences. Described by Sentinel Daily as “a musical version of Bernard Cornwell’s ‘Sharpe’ novels,” the band brings to life some of the most dramatic stories in military history through punchy, hook-laden metal and meticulously researched lyrics. Their high-octane riffs and majestic keyboards combine to deliver a sense of excitement, intensity, and grandeur that perfectly captures the spirit of these historical tales.
Since their formation in 2018, Forlorn Hope has released some incredible music, including their self-titled EP and the 2019 album “Over the Hills.” Now, in 2024, the band is back with their latest EP, “Valour Part 1.” Chris (vocals), Alexander (lead guitar/composition), and John (bass) continue to bring fans historic/ war infused heavy metal for what might just be their best release yet!
“The ‘Valour – Part I’ EP is the first part of ‘Valour’, the second full-length album from Forlorn Hope. ‘Valour’ tells the stories of fifteen Victoria Cross winning actions from Crimea to the Second World War; stories of sacrifice, determination and derring do on land, sea and in the air. It is a saga in equal parts thrilling, horrific and heart-breaking that explores not just the exploits of these extraordinary men, but the myriad and diverse conflicts in which they fought.”

Review:
First up is The Fusilier, a track inspired by Sergeant Luke O’Connor of the 23rd Regiment of Foot (Royal Welsh Fusiliers), the first soldier in the British Army to win the Victoria Cross during the Battle of the Alma (20/09/1854, Crimean War). The production is a significant step up from previous releases—this track feels immense and powerfully commanding. ‘The Fusilier’ features chugging rhythm guitars, monstrous double kick patterns, and an epic backdrop of symphonic elements. As always, Chris delivers with ripping vocal lines that tell a compelling story while cutting through the mix. A sizzling solo tops off the song, making it a great start to the EP!
Down In Flames is a powerful track inspired by James Brindley Nicolson VC and his heroics during the Battle of Britain on 16/08/1940. From the very start, the song grabs you with its striking opening lines before unleashing a storm of energy that feels like an unstoppable hurricane. The intricate guitar work, grand orchestral arrangements, and catchy vocals make it clear this is destined to be a live hit. The double kick section is particularly intense, evoking the sensation of a fighter jet roaring through the sky. The solo twists and turns with the support of a bold rhythm section from John and guest drummer Danny Kelly, capturing the epic intensity of an air battle.” Brilliant stuff!
Ulysses 1915 stands out as my favourite track, one that pulls you right to the front barrier, head banging with intensity. It’s a mid-tempo stomper with an eerie atmosphere that beautifully captures the story of Edward Unwin VC (V Beach Landings, Gallipoli, 25/04/1915, First World War). There are moments that subtly remind me of Iced Earth, but just enough to add a unique flavor. The drum and bass work exudes swagger, perfectly complementing the rich orchestration in the background. What really stands out is the intricate craftsmanship behind the music, which has held my attention every second. The lads of Forlorn truly shine, demonstrating their exceptional musicianship. ‘Ulysses 1915’ is a compelling, intense, and thrilling journey—ready to transport you back in time to an epic tale from World War I.”
Greater Love Hath No Man is a standout instrumental track that takes a unique turn, skilfully balancing varying tempos and light electric guitar work with bursts of sheer musical intensity. The gentle acoustics and string section create a soothing, drifting atmosphere. Just as you’re lulled by its calm, a lively section reminiscent of a jig emerges, before catapulting you back into the fray with thundering double kicks and a whirlwind of string notes. This spectacular instrumental track showcases how music alone can powerfully convey a story, rivalling even the most vivid lyrics.
The Last Ride cranks the intensity up to 11, continuing the epic musical journey we have experienced so far on ‘Valour Part 1.’ This track delves into the story of Lieutenants Nevill Coghill and Teignmouth Melvill of the 24th Regiment of Foot (South Wales Borderers), who were posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross at Isandlwana during the Anglo-Zulu War on January 22, 1879. As with previous tracks, it delivers everything you could wish for: compelling lyrics, guitar work that strikes with the force of a flurry of arrows, and a rhythm section with drums and bass that provides a solid backbone. Enhanced by exhilarating symphonic elements, the song shifts pace, allowing raw emotion to break through and shine brightly. It’s a powerful continuation of the epic narrative, full of dynamic energy and heartfelt intensity. A perfect way to end an EP!
Conclusion
I have to say, this release is nothing short of epic. From the production and musicianship to the storytelling and songwriting, Forlorn Hope has truly outdone themselves. ‘Valour Part 1’ feels like one of their finest works to date, with a colossal sound that grabs you from the first note. If you’re a fan of epic heavy/power metal with a historical and war-themed edge, you absolutely need to check out this album. I’m left eagerly anticipating the next instalment!
