REVIEW: DYRE LUPINE – VARIOUS SINGLES

Dyre Lupine are a mysterious group shrouded in the mists of the forests near Wichita, KS. There isn’t much about them to find in the usual spots around the internet. It’s likely that you’ll be hearing more about them soon.

First, let’s review the line up:

Vocals – Marta McKim

Bass – Scott McKim

Guitar – Not Mike

Drums – Clayton Gosset

This is a creative and ambitious four-piece band that is on the hunt to make their mark on the metal landscape. While strongly representing the themes of TNWOTHM, they borrow from prog, death metal, and hard rock. There is also a healthy influence of horror, supernatural, and gothic themes both in the music and lyrics. It’s easy to think that all of this could not come together in a great package. On the contrary… it comes together quite nicely. There is a tremendous amount of potential here for Dyre Lupine.

Here is a breakdown of the tracks, they are listed as singles on their Bandcamp site.

We Howl – This is a fast-paced track that gets out of the gate with a bang. The drums kick in, followed by a shrieking guitar riff, and topped off with a nice crunchy bass line. Then, the vocals kick in. Marta is pissed and it’s glorious. This track is tremendous!

Prophets of Deceit – Another in your face track that jumps out of the gate and grabs you. It’s a straight up metal track and gets the blood pumping.

Fall to the Black – On this track, the band stretches and goes a bit prog. This is more of what the band does well in their respective areas. Well done.

Black Goat Queen – Full on death metal. It’s like a switch flipped and they get dark. This is a mosh pit flurry of music, bodies, and screams.

Unyielding Leather – Solid metal/rock intro. Marta starts out in a conversational tone, and then soars into what her voice does best in the upper ranges.

Choir of the Damned – This is a slow and dark track. It’s a bit of an outlier to the group in the slow and moody place. It’s the only track that feels like it’s missing something. Nonetheless, it’s well done.

This band is more than a pleasant surprise. It’s a tight and creative effort that bites like a wolf hunting in the forest at night. Backed by a competent group, the vocals shine brightly. As it stands, the songs are a great starting point. With a bit of ambiance and production refinement, this could prove to be an incredible debut for a band with HUGE potential.

Well done, Dyre Lupine. More of this please!
