Even though they have not been around that long under their current banner, Mexicos Cypher Signals are progressing at quite a pace. The band have got a lot of exciting things currently going on and planned for 2023, so I wanted to find out more about what they had in store for the New Year. I was able to catch them for this insightful and interesting interview. Check out just what they had to say!

THE NWOTHM: For those who do not know who you are, can you tell us your band name, who is in the band and where you are from?
C. S: The name of the band is Cypher Signals, we are from Mexico City. We are currently formed by Andrea (Blackmajestyk) on Vocals, Omar Barreto (The Om) at Guitars/Bass Guitar and Rodrigo T.Fonseca (The Aiwass) on Drums/Bass Guitar/Synths
THE NWOTHM: How did the band form and is there any interesting story surrounding its formation?
C. S: The band was formed in 2022, the band was created since the departure of our ex bass player
Diego Camacho and by consequence the eventual breakup of our former band Steel Snake (active
from 2015 to 2021).The band was born from the need to carry together a collective crisis due the pandemic and in our personal lives issues, through music we found out a creative synergy which can express our
fury, pain and conviction of throw ourselves to the emptiness of existence, after 7 years playing
together we finally define our new path with this new project called Cypher Signals.
THE NWOTHM: Since the bands formation what big milestones have you achieved?
C. S: Previously as Steel Snake we released our first EP “First Contact” in digital format in 2018 getting recognition in the local and outside metal scene, eventually this album was released worldwide in CD format in 2019 via Narcoleptica Productions a label from Kazakhstan/Russia being sold out in a few weeks, something unexpected for us. The release was followed by a small promotional tour across Mexico in different cities, in this tour we opened for Voltax and this tour also included a concert series called “Triple Heavy Metal Treat” alongside with our contemporary friend bands Riding and Sentinel.
THE NWOTHM: Can you tell us any fun/ interesting facts about the members of the band?
C. S: We have been playing together for 7 years and since then, each member has different musical
tastes and influences as well as particular ideals. Although in some we managed to coincide,
others are far from each other. For example, Andrea has been vocally influenced by Ronnie James
Dio and her lyrics address topics such as social protest and radical feminism, while Rodrigo is
heavily influenced by progressive music and Avant Garde Metal, which is reflected in his unique
style. for the percussions. He is also a multi-instrumentalist musician and is currently also working
on his solo project called ‘Uprane’. On the other hand, Barreto’s sound takes up the essence of the
psychedelic rock of the late 70’s and the hardness of the classic heavy metal of those years.
THE NWOTHM: What bands and artists have influenced you and helped you to carve your sound?
C. S: Individually each member has different kinds of influences, as a group we have a very hybrid and special sound, but we can mention that our general influences as a band are such as Black Sabbath, Alienforce, Steelheart, Zed Yago, King Diamond, Rainbow, Shock Paris, Queensryche,
Judas Priest, but also Candlemass, Memento Mori, etc.

THE NWOTHM: Can you tell us about your most recent release(s) and any background information to the music? How did the songs come about?
C. S: Our most recent release it’s our first promotional single ‘’Signals’, a very aggressive, speed and heavy song that represent very well our current sound and this next January 19th it’s going to be released our second promotional single “Dance To Profane” with a exclusive premiere via Bandcamp and on our YouTube channel, this song it’s more based in the classic 80’s heavy metal sound with very deep drums, strong bass guitar and aggressive guitars over it the special voice of Andrea fulfilling the song, so stay tuned for this one. Both singles are included in our upcoming first full length album which it’s going to be released at March, 2023.
Talking about the process of making this new album, everything started during the last pandemic in which Omar started to live one block near Rodrigo in the same town so naturally both started to hang out in Omar’s house to jam, drink some beers and listen to music regularly every week. After a few months of jamming, some songs started to be created for the band so Andrea started to write the melodies and lyrics for the songs and eventually the whole album was created. Finally in October, 2022 we entered to the studio at La Casa en Llamas owned by Hector Ulises Vera (Voltax) to record the album, in the studio working as a trio the Vocals were carried by Andrea, Guitars and Bass Guitars (in half of the songs) by Omar and Drums, Bass Guitars (in the other half of the songs) and Synths by Rodrigo.
THE NWOTHM: What shows have you got coming up for 2023? Any major performances you would like to highlight?
C. S: During the first months of 2023 the band will not be playing live shows due we are currently
recruiting additional members for our current formation due as a trio it’s impossible to play this
songs live, we know that in our music genre sometimes it’s not easy to find the correct ones to join
the band to be a part of the family, but we’re still in the searching and we hope to find them soon.
The near plans are to start playing live shows once the band it’s completed and we are going to
start the promotional touring after the release of our first LP in March, 2023. For now we’d really
like to keep our presentations just for the best of the underground scene.
THE NWOTHM: Any other plans for 2023? With it being a new year, what do you hope to achieve in the upcoming months?
C. S: We are very excited, first of all, for the digital release of our first LP coming out in March, 2023, and its physical distribution in CD format by nationally and internationally shipping available in our
social media and Bandcamp. We are also currently participating in album compilations with
independent labels, one of them it’s Guerreras del Metal Vol.2 which it’s going to be released via
Last Warriors Records in CD format very soon available also in our social media. Eventually, as we
said before, after the release of the album we are going to start the promotional tour in Mexico in
the upcoming months and we can’t wait to show this music live with the audience.
