Dark Star was a British melodic heavy metal band formed in Birmingham, West Midlands, in 1978. Originally known as Berlin, the band emerged from the remnants of Suicide and included members Rik Staines, Bob Key, Dave Harrison, Mark Overland, and Steve Atkins. Associated with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement, they later shifted towards hard rock and AOR, exploring lyrical themes of fantasy and love.
Their signature track, “Lady of Mars,” gained recognition through appearances on compilation albums such as “Metal For Muthas Volume II.” Known for their energetic live performances, they played alongside acts like Budgie, Magnum, and Angel Witch. Their self-released debut single “Lady of Mars” on Steel Strike Records became a collector’s item, with early pressings clouded in myth due to production mishaps.
Dark Star released a self-titled full-length album in 1981 through Avatar Records, followed by the single “Kaptain Amerika” in 1982. The group disbanded while preparing a second album, primarily due to their label’s bankruptcy. A short-lived reunion in 1987 produced the album “Real to Reel” under FM Revolver Records, after which the band split permanently. Despite a limited discography, Dark Star holds a place in NWOBHM history as a cult act with a loyal following.
