Throw back Thursday: Earthshaker (Japan)

Earthshaker, formed in Osaka in 1978 and named after a track by Y&T, are one of Japan’s pioneering heavy metal bands. Their 1983 self-titled debut on King Records’ Nexus label, produced by Seisoku Ito, quickly established them as leaders of the Japanese scene alongside Loudness, with albums like Fugitive and Midnight Flight showcasing their mix of melodic hooks and hard-driving riffs. Over time, they shifted toward a more melodic hard rock approach, broadening their appeal at home while maintaining their reputation as a cornerstone of Japanese heavy music.

With an extensive discography spanning four decades including studio albums, live releases, compilations, and collaborations, Earthshaker remain remarkably consistent, still featuring their original lineup. After a brief hiatus in the mid-1990s, they reunited in 1999 and continue to record and tour actively today. Most recently they celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2023 with the album 40 and a national tour, and they are now preparing for the Earthshaker Tour Fugitive ’25-’26, further proof of their enduring legacy and vitality.
