Throw back Thursday: Epsilon (Chile)

The 1990s were an era marked by power metal, with its blazing double-kick drums, virtuosic neoclassical solos, and over-the-top epic choruses. Epsilon follows a heavier line, yet draws from power metal’s virtuosity and technicality in their sole EP, “Tan Lejos”—which in English means So Far Away.

It’s only five songs, but it feels like a masterclass in high-speed, risk-taking heavy metal. The opener, “So Far Away”, the only track sung in English, stands out with its soaring melodic vocals, constant shifts, and a neoclassical structure. “Toda Mi Ira” shines with its semi-galloping rhythm and emotive choruses. “Sangre, Dolor y Fe” features exquisite arrangements and pronounced bass lines with progressive sections that were highly original for the time.

Vi Caer” and “El Templo de un Dios” close the record, displaying remarkable versatility from a band that was active only between 1996 and the early 2000s. An excellent yet brief journey into a hidden heavy metal tradition from South America.
