Throw back Thursday: Turbo

Turbo was a heavy metal band from Burnley, Lancashire, England. They formed in 1979 and were part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) movement. The band was active during the early 1980s and eventually split up. They remained unsigned and independent throughout their career.

Turbo released the following recordings:

  • A demo in 1981
  • The EP “Stallion” in 1981
  • The single “Charged for Glory” in 1982
  • The song “Running,” which appeared on the compilation album New Electric Warriors in 1980

Additionally, the band recorded the song “Assassin” under the name Kosh, with the title “The Hit.” This track was included on the same compilation, with vocals performed by Nigel Burnham, who organized the album. The inclusion was due to available space on the record and limited time to involve another band.

In 2025, a compilation titled Charged for… Glory – The Ultimate Anthology was released, collecting the band’s key recordings.

Turbo from Burnley is not to be confused with another NWOBHM/Hard Rock band named Turbo from Grimsby.
