Heavy/Power metal torchbearers Dragonsclaw have made a thunderous return with their blistering new single “Don’t Break the Silence Again”, taken from their long-awaited third studio album Moving Target, due out in 2025 via High Roller Records.
Available now on LP and CD via www.hrrecords.de/DRAGONSCLAW, Moving Target marks a powerful comeback for the band, whose last studio effort Judgement Day was released back in 2013. Helmed by Giles Lavery, best known for his vocal work with Warlord, Alcatrazz, and Jack Starr, the new album is a statement of intent; epic, melodic, and unrelentingly heavy.
“For me the direction on Moving Target was intended to be if Judas Priest had made an album somewhere in 1985 between Defenders Of The Faith and Turbo,” Lavery explains. “With some of the second Fifth Angel album in there too.”
Founded in 2010 in Sydney, Australia, DRAGONSCLAW originally gained attention with their 2011 debut Prophecy, and built momentum with Judgement Day two years later. Now, with an expanded international lineup featuring Australian musicians Ben Thomas (guitar) and Aaron Thomas (bass), along with Warlord veterans Mark Zonder (drums) and Jimmy Waldo (keyboards), the band is firing on all cylinders.
Keyboards take a prominent role on the new material, with Lavery citing inspiration from the likes of Virgin Steele, Tony Banks (Genesis), and Tony Carey (Planet P Project). “I think for this album the keyboards are very important, they create the needed atmosphere and drama,” says Lavery. “I really like that haunting effect keyboards can have when used right… Jimmy Waldo is one of those guys too.”
Among the standout tracks is the fiery speed metal anthem “Shadowfire,” featuring guest vocals from Todd Michael Hall of Riot. “’Shadowfire’ reminded me of a current-day Riot song, so I asked Todd Michael Hall to sing on it with me, and he was kind enough to do so!” Lavery shares.
In contrast, the melodic gem “(Tell Me) All Your Lies” leans into a more accessible, Maiden-esque sound. “It’s got a bit of that ‘Wasted Years’ vibe,” Lavery admits. “Co-producer Thomas Mergler was largely responsible for helping to finish that song up… he added some very good ideas to it.”
With Moving Target, DRAGONSCLAW delivers everything fans have been waiting for and more. Lavery’s soaring vocals, described as channeling the spirit of Michael Kiske, Geoff Tate, and Ronnie James Dio, blend seamlessly with the band’s rich instrumental palette to create a modern-day metal classic in the making.
