Interview: Skeletörn (Mexico)

7–10 minutes

From the heart of Querétaro, Mexico, Skeletörn rises with face paint, fire, and fury channeling the raw power of classic Heavy Metal and the spectacle of Shock Rock. Blending the aggression of Motörhead with the theatrical flair of Kiss and the cultural depth of Mexican wrestling, Skeletörn isn’t just a band, they’re a full-throttle experience.

Formed in 2019, this high-speed quartet brings a fierce DIY spirit, a love for Spanish-language metal, and an unmistakable visual identity rooted in heritage and rebellion. In this interview, we dive into their origins, influences, and what lies ahead for one of Mexico’s most electrifying underground acts.

Interview

TheNwothm: For those who are just discovering your music, who is Skeletörn and where are you from?

Alan: We are a Heavy Metal/Shock Rock band from the city of Querétaro, Mexico. Currently the members of Skeletörn are Amadeus on guitar, Raúl on bass, Diego on guitar and me, Alan, on drums, we all do vocals in the band.

TheNwothm: How was the band formed and what inspired the formation of Skeletörn?

Alan: We formed in 2019 at the beginning as a trio, from 2019 to 2021 we had a very similar concept to Motörhead and Tank, even our lyrics were in English. At the beginning of 2021 we decided to start singing in Spanish inspired by bands like V8, Luzbel or Barón Rojo and we began to incorporate in our presentations elements such as smoke and fir.

Almost at the same time we planned to use face paint to give an identity to the band inspired by Mexican ancestors, wrestling and Kiss ,Alice Cooper or King Diamond’s shock rock, as we had always dreamed of having a Shock Rock band. The band Seikima II was also a big influence on us because of their image and that they sang in their own language, something we wanted to replicate.

Raúl: The band was also formed as a response to the lack of presence of local heavy metal bands. We all love the genre and wanted to create our own group, but not only be another band. We wanted to stand out from the crowd. During the pandemic, there were no live events, so we were able to focus on finding our sound and defining our look

TheNwothm: The name “Skeletörn” is intriguing, what’s its history?

Alan: At first the band was called Skeletörr, a combination of the words Skeletor and Törr, taken from the cult Czech Black Metal band, later we replaced the last R with N since Törn in Swedish means thorn. Our band mascot, Frank, is a skeleton with a spiked helmet so it made sense we leave the name Skeletörn.

TheNwothm: Being based in Santiago de Querétaro, how has the local scene and culture influenced your sound and identity as a band?

Alan: Not that much, since there are not many local Heavy Metal bands, usually more Thrash and Death Metal dominate in the city, Disgorge, Putrefact and Six Beer are bands that personally influenced me as a young man, on the other hand in our art we usually use places in the city to give it a Queretaro identity.

TheNwothm: How is the heavy metal/hard rock scene in Querétaro and in Mexico in general? Are there any local bands that you admire or have played with?

Alan: It’s quite good, since in the city there are a lot of bands, some of which we have shared the stage with are Muerte o Gloria, Sacrify Souls, Espina, Unholy Bastards. Others that I also admire but we have not coincided in a show are Question, Evil Shade, Victime, Disgorge, Six Beer, Putrefact, Altar of Blood and Fuerza y Honor to mention a few. The scene in the country in general is quite good since many bands are currently coming out.

TheNwothm: Do you incorporate any traditional Mexican elements, whether musical or thematic, into your songs, either consciously or unconsciously?

Alan: Despite there being a lot of comparison with Kiss, we also use it since our Mexican ancestors used it to represent deities or some spiritual connection, in addition to also taking inspiration from Mexican wrestlers.

TheNwothm: Let’s start with your 2021 demo. What can you tell us about that first release and the experience of releasing it independently?

Raúl: The demo comes as a first approach to recording our aggressive and raw sound and capturing it in the most faithful way to what you hear live, which is where we think we really shine, both the music and the show. Having released it independently brought us closer to the whole creative process that it entails. From choosing which songs we were going to record, since we had more songs ready at that moment, to getting involved in the mixing, mastering and visual design of it. Living this process definitely made it clear to us that having the visualization of what we want and how it should be presented is the path we would have to follow with future productions.

TheNwothm: Is there a particular message or story behind “Luchando por el Metal”? What inspired that song, either lyrically or emotionally?

Alan: That song is a tribute to Mexican wrestling, it’s a way to pay homage to something that is part of our culture and that served as inspiration for our outfits.

TheNwothm: “Destructora” sounds like something shocking. Could you break down the concept or energy you were looking for in that song?

Diego: It was mainly a direct influence from the Hard Rock of the mid-70’s, we wanted it to sound to the point and easy to connect. We feel that it has the elements to make an iconic song and that’s why many people sing it in live shows.

TheNwothm: Outside of music, what do you do to relax or be inspired?

Diego: Everyone has their own recreational and ordinary activities. Some of us have leisure activities such as hanging out with the band, being with our friends and family, in addition to being a big fan of video games, classic horror movies as well as the literature and poetry of Edgar Allan Poe. Which often serves me for the inspiration of many lyrics.

Raúl: Video games and movies have always been a source of inspiration for me. Science fiction and fantasy have defined in me the approach I give to many aspects in my life. Hand in hand, I have always loved languages and learned from them; how they shape our way of thinking and apply it in my life and in music

Amadeus: I have always been one to live intense things, from moving and contact sports such as basketball, playing video games, skating and in general living things that give me intense feelings and today for example enjoy more lively music, although sometimes that lifestyle has exhausted me so I enjoy resting sometimes to give 100% again,  a masochistic routine perhaps, but one that is always enjoyable.

TheNwothm: Can fans expect a full-length album soon?

Raúl: Without giving too many details, Skeletörn has never stopped composing music. We always bounce ideas at each other and look for the sound we’re so passionate about when writing to make sure we have the material that fans deserve. We definitely have the songs for a full-length album and we’re  currently working on it.

TheNwothm: Do you have any plans for touring soon, either in Mexico or internationally?

Diego: Since we started the band, we have dreamed of it, it is on the table. But we will definitely do it anytime

TheNwothm: What is Skeletörn’s ultimate goal for the next few years?

Diego: We are looking to establish ourselves even more, we want Skeletörn to reach the ears of those who are willing to experience the feeling of Shock Metal. We are betting everything on ourselves, without fear of criticism, we are committed to continue making Skeletörn a name in the history of Heavy Metal.

Raúl: Just as we enjoy creating and playing this music, we hope the people who read this enjoy listening to it and appreciate the great effort and love behind it all.

Amadeus: Let’s hope that fate and rock will lead us to share an experience in a show soon, we are sure that both sides deeply enjoy the music that we are proud to offer you and hoping that soon we can live the full experience.
