Review: Rattlesnakes ‘Deeper Shades of Torment’

Release date: April 2025

Review

Burn for you is the first track on the ep and it starts of with the sounds of simple drum pattern using a cross stick on the snare.A dreamy semi acoustic guitar melody comes in for a brief moment before a crushing guitar riff jumps straight in. We are introduced to rich and warm vocal lines that literally slice the song apart. Instantly I get the impression that the band mixes classic heavy metal ideas with a modern approach. The delicate oohs ring out at select moments adding a nice touch and the choruses really pack a punch.I can see this as a proper headbanger at shows with all the tasty riffs and energy it rams in. The harmonised guitar licks later in the song bring us back to a more a heavy metal feel but then we are thrown into spiralling solo section. The band really give it there all on the way out making it a great opening track to the ep!

Firestarter is up and next so lets see if this is a rocket about to explode. So it kicks things of with a fiery riff before powering forward with speed and haste. This is much more upbeat feeling like a grenade about to go off. There is a lot of double kick patterns and smoking riffs that make this feel very energetic. I think however the solo section is my favourite part leaving me wanting more. The vocals from that point forward take a step up and rip roar towards the skies. The big metal scream at the end is certainly the cherry on the cake.

The interlude starts off with the sounds of a clock ticking before we are giving some more acoustic ideas that drift off into the darkness.Bell chimes act as bit of backdrop adding to the atmosphere. But the track soon ends leaving me wanting more. It’s a great track but I would have preferred to see this on a full length album where personally I think it would make more sense.

Love Me Harder is the next track on the ep! A big snare section opens the track before more punishing riffs are delivered. Up until this point I feel that one of the main stand out points of the band is the insane vocal abilities of ……. She has some absolutely amazing pipes on her and this track is a great example of this. The slower mid section shows some feelings and emotions, a bit of tug on the heartstrings. But then a nice and spicy solo section comes along sprinkling in a little bit of extra flavour! Honestly this is one of those tracks that needs cranking up to 11.

Selfish Soul gives us a burning opening riff that feels a bit classic. But the tone of this has a slightly bit dark feel the vocals but only slightly. The guitar and bass work drives everything forward with big pounding drums acting as a backbone. This is another one of those neck breakers and guaranteed to make any audience member break into a sweat. I think it Is probably my favourite track on the EP and probably down to the fact that it feels a bit more in the direction of the heavy metal vibe that we are familiar with. Either way an excellent song to end the EP.

Conclusion

Rattlesnakes are young energetic band who know how to bring it.If you are wanting heavy metal with a bit more a modern crossover approach then the new EP from the band certainly delivers in that way. In particular the vocal work is absolute fire and will certainly melt speakers. Great effort guys!
