Review:Raways – Raw Takes

Raways is an 80s style hard & heavy band from Florence (Italy) forged by thelove of the many faces of classic metal. As part of the NWOTHM movement we aim to play our music as it’s supposedto be: loud, fast and melodic. The band is formed by long time friends and is fully (and proudly) independent. We record our music in the most sincere and real way possible trying to keep the sound natural and dynamic like the classics of early 80s and theunderground gems loved by the experts of NWOBHM.The musical friendship and the fun we have in studio guide our way on thesound of heavy metal composing songs, playing, laughing and sharing good times!“Raw Takes” is the reveal ep of the band and consists of 4 songs recorded livein the rehearsal room that will be also present (re-recorded with a better sound)on the forthcoming first album of the band. We think that all the energy of the band shines through this little ep being also an example of how the band soundsin live shows!

Review

The EP opens with a riff-driven anthem called Constrictor that grabs the listener by the throat. Leonardo Trevisan’s powerful and commanding vocals are immediately front and centre, complemented by a razor-sharp guitar attack from Davide Martini and Cosimo Trevisan. The dynamic shifts and melodic hooks are reminiscent of early Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, but with a raw edge that sets Raways apart. It has a lot of energy and feels uplifting which is a great start to the EP.

Digital Priest stands out with its dark, brooding energy and tight musicianship. The interplay between Davide Martini and Cosimo Trevisan’s guitars creates a layered, dynamic tension that drives the track forward, alternating between heavy riffs and intricate harmonies. Mirko De Angelis’ bass provides a commanding foundation, perfectly complemented by Francesco Cocchetti’s sharp, precise drumming.

Children of the Afterworld delivers a forceful dose of bashing riffs and driving energy, showcasing Raways’ mastery of heavy metal power. The guitars command attention with their raw intensity, creating a sound that feels both big and dynamic. Francesco Cocchetti’s drumming locks in perfectly, amplifying the track’s weight and impact. Leonardo Trevisan’s vocals are full of grit and conviction, adding a powerful edge to the song’s commanding presence. The track thrives on its straightforward heaviness and tight execution, making it a strong addition to the EP’s lineup.

Fate of Man closes the EP with a mix of gentle moments with its acoustic guitars and a bold ballsy rhythms. The track’s driving riffs and precise rhythm section create a steady force. The guitar work is sharp and engaging, with solos that are fiery yet well-integrated into the song’s structure. It is certainly a piece that combines a mix of tempos including a mid tempo stomp and a shining chorus section that feels warm and bright. Then you have the flavour in the heated faster sections. To end the track returns to some gentle acoustics leaving a lingering afetrthought.

Conclusion

Overall, the songs are well-crafted, showcasing the band’s skill and musicality. The EP is packed with great riffs and sharp, dynamic solos that highlight their talent. “Constrictor,” the opening track, stands out as the most energetic and exciting moment, with an especially impressive solo that sets the tone for the release. While the band plays it safe with straightforward, solid material on their debut, it’s clear they’ve laid a strong foundation. As they continue to grow, I’m eager to see how their creativity develops and how they evolve into an even more distinctive force in the heavy metal scene.
