INTERVIEW: CREATURES (BRAZIL)

If you take polished leather, dashing hair and finely groomed moustaches combined with sizzling hot music you have the scorching Brazilian band Creatures! We had a little chat with them to find out more about their world!

TheNwothm: Welcome Creatures it is great to be doing this interview with you! Can introduce the band members and where you are from?

A: Hey There, first of all, I’d like to thank you for invite us and give us an opportunity to talk about our music! So, the current line up consists of me, Mateus Cantaleano on guitar, Ricke Nunes on bass, Sidnei Dubiella on drums and last but not least Marc Brito on vocals, we’re all from Curitiba (Brazil) except for Marc, who lives in Belo Horizonte (another Brazilian city).

TheNwothm: Can you tell us how you formed and chose the band name?

A: I founded the “band”, if you can call it a band at the time, around the end 2019, at that time, it was just me and Roberto, the former singer. The name came about ’cause I wanted a one-word name that sounded strong and easy to remember, and “Creatures” seemed to fit all of that.

TheNwothm: On Metal Archives it says you explore themes of Love, Women and Fantasy? If that the case and if so can you expand on your themes both musically and lyrically?

A: Oh yeah, what else could we write about? Haha. Actually, I really like writing lyrics that have more than one meaning, you know? Almost all the lyrics are about real experiences in our lives, but mixed with some kind of fantasy, so that we can make it more fun.

TheNwothm: Paraná in Brazil is where you guys are from! It seems we have had a good flow of bands from Brazil recently hitting the pages of TheNwothm! What is your thoughts on Brazilian metal culture and its impact on your music!

A: I think it’s great that we have a significant number of young heavy metal bands in Brazil, maybe it could put us in the map of the main underground festivals around the world. I don’t know if I can say that our culture has any impact in our music, maybe it does, maybe it doesn’t, but nothing consciously.

TheNwothm: What would you say the pros and cons are on living in Brazil?

A: I’m not saying there aren’t pros, but I really can’t think about one right now. About the cons, well, everything related to music equipment is WAY more expensive than in European countries our the US, a good guitar or amp costs almost 10x the most people’s salary, actually everything related to music as well, studio recordings, stuff like that. Also we don’t have many festivals focused on classic heavy metal, I don’t know why, but extreme metal (death, thrash) seems to be what sells the most here! I could spend a whole day talking about it, but let us end it here!

TheNwothm: Let us talk about your music! In 2020 you put out the your first two songs “Dressed to Die” and “Lightning in My Eyes.” Can you tell our readers about writing those first songs?

A: Right, these songs were literally the first ones I wrote for Creatures, nothing too thought out, they were actually made in a very natural way, maybe that’s why they worked at the time.

TheNwothm: What can you tell our readers a bit about yourselves?

A: Well, to be honest we’re just the classic young heavy metal maniacs who really enjoy playing and making music like many others in the world, nothing too special.

TheNwothm: By looking at thing you guys are all well kept! So who is the one that spends all the time in front of the mirror?

A: Well, thank you for the compliment. Our drummer is for sure the one who spends more time in front of the mirror, the guy literally goes everywhere dressed like Yngwie Malmsteen, but it’s our bassist, who holds the title of the most handsome in the band! haha

TheNwothm: And expanding on this question who gets all the attention, who is the one that is late for everything and who is the one that talks to much!

A: Well, our singer Marc is the most extroverted, so he gets more attention than the rest. The drummer, Sidnei, is the one who is late, maybe because he spends more time getting dressed. About talking too much, I think we are all on the same page on that one! haha

TheNwothm: What axes have you got in your collections? Any particular makes or models etc?

A: So, I’m a fan of the classic shapes, so I have an Epiphone Flying V and a Stratocaster, Ricke the bassist has 3 Ibanez, but don’t ask me about the models haha

TheNwothm: You unleashed the beast that is “Creatures” which was your debut album in 2021! Can you give us an overview of the tracks, the writing and recording process for the record?

A: On this album, I was immersed in that 80s hard rock/heavy metal aura, bands like Dokken, Icon, Ratt and Whitesnake on the ’87 album. So it has a LOT of those influences as you’ve probably noticed. It took me almost a year to record, since I did almost everything by myself, Bob lived in another city, and everything was done remotely, but I think we did our best and I really like that album!

TheNwothm: And what songs would you each say are your favourites?

A: My favorites are “Dressed to Die” and “Nothing Lasts Forever”, I believe the rest of the current band shares this with me!

TheNwothm: You were with Iron Oxide Records so how did that come about? And what happened to them?

A: At first Bart Gabriel messaged me on our facebook page, asking if we were looking for a label to release us, but at the time we hadn’t finished the album and nothing came of it. A year later when we finished the album, I emailed him and he agreed to release the album. It seems that now he’s no longer working with labels and releasing albums, if i’m not mistaken, he now works with booking and as a manager for touring bands, anyway he’s a really cool guy and I wish him the best in everything he does.

TheNwothm: What would you say your favourite thing about being in a band is? Is it making music, playing live or seeing the smiles on peoples faces for instance?

A: I believe it’s all those things you mentioned together! It’s an amazing feeling to write songs, record, release and then play them live, and to see other people enjoying them is even better!

TheNwothm: And since being together what would your say your fondest memories have been?

A: We got a few good memories together, but the most “memorable” one is definitely, a show we did in São Paulo, in 2022 at a festival called “Metal Daze”,  great crowd, singing their hearts out in every song, we had a real great time!

TheNwothm: Last year you put out the song “Danger” and I must say that has some damn fiery licks in there! What can you tell us about the song?

A: Thanks! Our goal in Danger was to put out a short and straightforward song, with everything we like to hear in a song, catchy choruses, powerful screams, sharp riffs, a cool guitar solo, some dynamic too, with some soft parts, stuff like that.

TheNwothm: So what is next musically for the band? Is there an album in the works?

A: We’re looking to release a single in the next few weeks, and head into the studio probably in August to start recording the next album.

TheNwothm: Looking towards the rest of 2024 have you got any big shows coming up or any tours?

A: We have a few shows coming up, but our main focus will be on recording the next album!

TheNwothm: Where can fans buy your music and merch?

A: You can buy t-shirts directly with us, on our instagram or facebook page. Vinyl and CD on Sonic Age Records store and Cassettes on Tapes of Terror store.
