REVIEW

Discovering a new band is always an adventure (the good kind), and I love to see new blood entering the metal scene from across the world. Enter, WAILING BANSHEE, who hail from Manchester, England. Before jumping into “Hit the Ground”, I wanted to first listen to “Hidden Chapters”, and I’m glad that I did! It was a great track, and a nice introduction to the band.

As for their logo design and cover artwork, I have to commend WAILING BANSHEE for already having a mascot of sorts. Variations of (I think) the same woman appear on the cover art of all 4 of their singles thus far, and mascots are always fun to see. Similarly, their logo design, while simple is solid and none too busy. Sometimes simplicity is the key.

Without further adieux, let us “Hit the Ground”! The NWOBHM vibes were strong! With an addictive chorus, and the chugging riff after said chorus, a facemelter of a solo, not to mention a great drum intro, and this was all around a great track. Production wise, it was solid, especially for what will be a debut EP. I have to say that I think everyone in the band was giving 105% percent on this one, thundering ahead like a well-oiled machine. If I had to compare the sound of WAILING BANSHEE to another NWOTHM act, it would probably be their fellow Brits, OFFENDED. I hear a lot of similarities in vocal style between WAILING BANSHEE’s Dani and OFFENDED’s Carol Fernandez.

CONCLUSION

All told, this was a short and sweet track that lasts just over the 3 minute mark, but I really appreciate that it does sound distinctive from “Hidden Chapters”, and I can’t wait to hear the rest of the EP. WAILING BANSHEE have leeched themselves into my brain as a band to watch out for in the coming years.
