INTERVIEW: GREYWOLF (BRAZIL)

If you love heavy metal that is heavily influenced by Conan The Barbarian and other epic things then I would look no further exploring the glorious music of Fabio Paulinelli’s GreyWolf!

TheNwothm: Hey there Fabio nice to meet you! How are you doing?

Fabio: Hi brother i am good, thanks, nice to meet you too.

TheNwothm: So to let our readers know you are one man project under the name Grey Wolf! How did you decide to go ahead with the idea for Grey Wolf?

Fabio: I aways wanted to experiment that mix of Traditional Heavy Metal in terms of instrumental with raw vocals based on Conan The Cimmerian and Epic Themes in general that is a thing i like a lot. I was playing Bass in many bands in the past and that was also an opportunity to test my compositor side. In the beginning was something without any kind of pretension. I just wanted to write the songs and record for myself.

TheNwothm: Your are from Contagem, Minas Gerais In Brazil! I have actually interview a few bands in recent months form Brazil! But what does the history and culture of Brazil mean to you and how has it shaped the music you create?

Fabio: To be honest i think i was born in the wrong country hahaha. The only thing that i have from that culture is Football that was something passed from father to son. But a cool thing about Minas Gerais is that Sarcofago is from here and they  influenced the whole Black Metal scene in Norway.

TheNwothm: Are there any particular artists or bands from Brazil that you are loving right now and if so are there any you would like to share a stage with?

Fabio: Yes that is a lot of cool Bands here that i would like to share a stage even that now is not possible because I don’t play live since 2016 when i decided return to the status of Studio Project. But bands like Battalion, Hellish War, Living Metal, Thunderlord, Nightwolf, Dunkkel Reiter, and many others and some of these i already shared a stage in the past when i was active as Band.

TheNwothm: You kicked things off back in 2012 and since then have been extremely busy and put out countless releases! Where do you get all your ideas?

Fabio: Everything came natural to me. I practically dedicate my life to that. I listen Heavy Metal every single day, that is part of me and the music flows naturally. I have a particular formula to compose and if you pay attention i am aways repeating myself and that is not a problem to me because the bands that i most like do it. I don’t like bands that put a different style album in each record. I believe i created a recognised style in Grey Wolf and i want to keep that.

TheNwothm: So from what I understand you play bass, do vocals and program drums! So what other musicians have you had help you out to fulfil your visions for each of your projects?

Fabio: Actually now i record also the Rhythm Guitars, since the album The Last Journey of An Old Viking. From the same period i have Junior Bonora (Thunderlord) to make the Guitar Solos in the songs. I have Arthur Migotto that made the production of many of my albums and he make also amazing Backing Vocals. Grey Wolf is a very personal thing. Even the logo i designed myself.

TheNwothm: So looking at your huge discography can you highlight some of your favourite or standout releases?

Fabio: I believe my last album The Icy Mountains is my favourite until now. But i can mention also Cimmerian Hordes, Glorious Death, The Last Journey of Na Old Viking. But The Icy Mountains is in the first place to me until now.

TheNwothm: And out of those if I was a first time listener, are there any particular songs you would send me to?

Fabio: That is a difficult question because i have a lot of material hahaha. Maybe Thunder And Rain, Cimmerian Hordes, Glorious Death, The Northman, Thor, Grey Wolf, War. These i believe could give a good idea about the sonority of GW to first time listener.

TheNwothm: Considering you have put out a lot of music where do you get your influences from and how do you keep each release fresh and different?

Fabio: The musical influences come from a lot of Heavy Metal Music that i listen every day. The lyrical influences comes from Conan The Barbarian in general that is a thing that i love from my 9 years old. Conan The Barbarian came to my life even before Heavy Metal. But some times i write about social critics and Heavy metal also.  About the releases i believe i was increasing my compositions about Guitar lines with time. I Believe i evolved my self a little in this aspect and this come naturally when you do something for long time. Maybe each album sounds diferrent but with the same essence from the beginning. Maybe the production makes some difference.

TheNwothm:  How do you push yourself each time to evolve your music and not take a step back?

Fabio: This evolution comes natural because i do it about long time now. I dont push myself, this came automatically. And to be honest i never think about my last release when a start to compose a new one. I don’t make comparison. I let flow spontaneous. Until today GW is a thing made without any kind of pretension. And i believe that is good. Its Pure.

TheNwothm: Moving away from the music for a moment what can you tell our readers about your self? When your not making music what do you like to do in your spare time?

Fabio: I like to hear my CDs, read my Comics and Books. Im a collector of these items. CDs, Comics and Books is with i spend my Money. I like to spend time at home, i don’t go out, i am very inmate.

TheNwothm: And in terms of your instruments, what kind of basses do you have in your collection?

Fabio: Actually i have a Tobias Tobby, just that. I dont have Bass Collection.I had many Basses through the years, many Ibanez that i like a lot.  First of all i live in a Third Word Country and everything related to Music here is very expensive. So i can not give to me this luxury to have a Bass Collection. But for me the important is what you do with your instrument. I have a simple one but i produce a lot with it. From the other side i know people that have many and expensive instruments and don’t produce almost nothing. The important is what you do, i think.

TheNwothm: So let us talk about your latest album “The Icy Mountains.” Can you give us an overview of the 10 tracks and what your latest release is all about?

Fabio: I just follow my standard formula with GW. I have some Epic songs like Thunder and Rain, We Were Born to Fight that came from my mind. I Have also Metal Themes songs like They Rule The Night and The Power of Metal for example. I have the ballad Little Eva that i wrote for my girlfriend, i have The Northman that i wrote inspired from the Movie and the Final Track Troy that i wrote inspired also from the Movie Troy. That last one was an experience to me. Is the longest song that i wrote so far. I aways wanted to do that but is not so simple. But i believe i had a good result in the end with Troy. I think is the Highlight of the album. Arthur made a real nice job with Backing Vocals and Narration. I am very happy about that song.

TheNwothm: When you approached the writing and recording of this record did you have a routine already following on from previous releases or did you do things differently this time round?

Fabio: I did exactly the same that i do from the beginning. When i put an album out i am aways working already in a new one. I never stop to compose. I like to do it like this.

TheNwothm: What musicians featured on this record and who were the team behind the production?

Fabio: To Icy Mountains i have Junior Bonora in The Guitar Solos and Arthur Migotto in the Production, Backing Vocals and Narration on Troy.

TheNwothm: I am loving the artwork! So how did you come up with the idea for it and who created it?

Fabio: I have Giggio Bernardinho for the Artworks. He do a really nice job. To be honest i ordered from him the Little Eva art and he came also with these 2 others that is one the cover of the album and the other that i used on the slipcase. From the art i took the idea for the tittle The Icy Mountains. I had already the instrumental part ready but the lyrics not and did the lyric when i saw the art.

TheNwothm: In terms of live performances do you have a live band and if so what plans do you have for 2024?

Fabio: No no. I will never play live again. I took that decision in 2016 and i remain in my position. I am a very difficult personality, I am very systematic person when is about Music. Music form me is very serious thing, not fun. I lost friendships through the years because they could not understand that and is better to continue alone with GW. I am not easy to deal.

TheNwothm: Where an fans buy your music and merch?

Fabio: Directly with me through my Facebook (Fabio Paulinelli or Grey Wolf), my Email and for Digital they can go to Bandcamp.

TheNwothm: Anything else you would like to mention?

Fabio: I am right now working in the second part of Stygia. A new material that will follow exactly the same formula of the first. Will call BACK TO STYGIA and this may come until the end of 2024. Say tuned. Stay Metal /,,/
