More like “Greatness Lies Within”

Mortal Soil is dark heavy metal/rock act from Finland that was formed in 2019 by Joel Burner. The idea behind Mortal Soil is to express the internal atmosphere, personal visions and observations in the form of music and lyrics. In 2021 we released our first singles with the drummer Nick Grave titled “Devils in my Head” & “Evil Strikes at Midnight” and in September 2021 our debut album “Mortal Soil” was released through Underground Power Records.
The recently released single “NIGHT LIES WITHIN” was produced, recorded and mixed by Lost Society’s proficient guitarist Arttu Lesonen. Behind the drum kit on this single was Malice Cooper showing his skills. The magnificent artwork was made by Mirkow Gastow who had made visuals, for example, to Zakk Wylde’s Zakk Sabbath. Musically “Night Lies Within” continued on a path of heavy metal with dark nuances mixed with rock elements that was started on the debut album.
The band reached out to us directly here at TheNWOTHM, and with the rapid pace of the holidays, it’s taken us a bit longer than we’d have liked to get to it. But we’re very pleased to finally give it the listen it deserves.

REVIEW
I adored MORTAL SOIL’s self-titled debut release from 2021 (“Graveyard Dust” is such a great tune), and a single can only mean one thing… a new album lurks near! Being a single, there is only well… a single song, but let’s not waste time any further and dive on in.
“Night Lies Within” begins with some solid riffage that made me recall the recent THE NIGHT ETERNAL record, which was good stuff. As Burner’s vocals arrived, I found myself once again for his vocal stylings. Also the added in growl on occasion was such a great touch for ambiance. I have to shout out how badass the lyrics are as well, “bleeding black heart” is metal as hell. That tempo shift at around 3:35 with more harsh vocals was an absolute god tier transition, followed by yet another god tier transition into a semi-orchestral bridge piece.
CONCLUSION
Whew!! What an absolute facemelter this beast was. It may have only been one song, but damn if it wasn’t a great one. Cannot wait to see what MORTAL SOIL has next in the pipeline. Don’t miss this one.
TheNWOTHM Score: 10/10 (it’s a single)
