REVIEW: LEGENDRY – TIME IMMORTAL WEPT

The Pittsburgh-based powerhouse emerges once again from the mists with more epic and mystical heavy metal that will satisfy their loyal fans and serve as a fine entry point for newcomers.

Legendry is an epic metal power trio from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania that blends the sword-fighting tales of heroes from bygone metal history with enough progressive elements to help them make a strong impression. This is a band for any fan who wants a unique and consistent vibe to their latest listen. Time Immortal Wept is their newest album and whether you are a returning fan or a fresh-faced whelp, you will not be disappointed. Let’s break it down track by track:

1. The Bard’s Dream kicks off the album with crackles from a campfire. Those who will listen are gathered around to hear the tale the bard in question will tell. The Bard lulls us into a dream-like state before a heavier interruption reminds the us collected devotees that this is a metal adventure we are about to embark on. The riffs carry us forward into the unknown!

2. Sigil Strider rides strongly off the kinetic force built up in the previous track. A strong and very memorable riff accompanied by brave words carry the message: you live by the sword, your steel is true, and men are built by experience in battle. You may have heard this brand of lyricism before but when it’s delivered with this kind of melody and conviction, you cannot help but love it. You’ll be ready to pick up your own weapon of choice and join the battle yourself!

3. The Prophecy keeps the proceedings rolling along without losing any momentum. Legendry have a story they want to tell but they never sacrifice catchy songwriting to get to where they need to go. The band is willing to slow things down and let them breathe so you can take it all in. This separates them from the pack of those who are riding the current wave of retro revival, and this song is a prime example of their talent.

4. Warrior of Space and Time picks up the pace by flat out kicking the thrust lever into full gear. The drums are pounding around you, the guitars are in full-on speed metal mode, and you can actually hear the bass being picked furiously on the periphery of the aural spectrum, which is very welcome and seldom seen in modern metal mixing. This track has an urgency that you would hope for in a song with this title! The solo absolutely rips here and this track overall is a highlight of the album.

5. The Winds Between Worlds is a very mystical, Manilla Road-esque instrumental that leads us into the next track…

6. Chariots of Bedlam brings the heaviness back in a big way with swirling guitars, with keyboards adding texture to the already boundless atmosphere this album brings to the table. All the ingredients come together to capture the essence of what makes the genre “epic” heavy metal. Legendry is also not afraid to bring in elements from other genres to piece together their mythos. This track is a strong highlight on this record.

7. The Bard’s Reverie circles things back around and sets the stage for the next part of the story. It’s a much faster and harder-hitting tale than the one that begins the album. The guitars are out to play with lots of twin soloing and speedy riffs to keep your head banging by that campfire light.

8. Time Immortal Wept is the titanic ending one would hope for from this kind of band. I am happy to report that Legendry does not drop the ball here. They are deftly able to command your attention for the 11-minute runtime. All of the great elements I’ve mentioned from the previous tracks coalesce into a masterful odyssey that whisks you across a mythic metal landscape. The vocals are on point. The instruments absolutely soar. The vibe is undeniable. It’s very easy for a band to lose themselves in a track this long and start navel-gazing. Legendry avoids the traps and doesn’t waste a single second until those crackling embers from the campfire return to remind you that you are now home. The journey may be over but a call to high adventure always awaits the brave. This is how you go big and wrap up an album with a colossal closer.

Wrapping Up:

Time Immortal Wept is the strongest offering yet from Legendry. This is the band continuing to live up to the promise that is heard on their previous albums. Everything continues to improve and the songwriting is the biggest leap made on this one. This is a concept album and the second in a planned trilogy. Thankfully the songs are extremely strong and stand on their own if you’re unable to follow what the band calls “The Earthwarrior Cycle.” Tales of old gods, sorcery, and prophecy are interwoven with heroic musical sensibilities that don’t get lost in the weeds. Falling into auto-fellating wankery is a common trap for bands with this much talent and a desire to show their skills. Legendry avoids those issues by remembering to get to the point when it’s time to do so. If you are ready to take up the call, I cannot give this album anything less than my highest recommendation. Legendry have laid their steel by the hearth fire and I can only eagerly await what comes next.
