INTERVIEW: ROAD HOG (POLAND)

Coming from the beautiful city of Kraków in Poland, Road Hog are a 4 piece outfit that have been blasting their music to masses out loud since 2012! Last year they kept the flame burning by unleashing their latest helping of metal named Gates of Madness upon the world! Karol gave us an insight into the band!

THE NWOTHM: Hey there Roadhog! Can you start by introducing us to the band, who the members are and where you are from?

R.H: Hey! Roadhog is a nwothm act from Cracow, Poland, consisting of four heavy metal
maniacs: Maciek and Przemek on guitars, Krzysiek on bass and vocals and me
(Karol) on drums. I joined the band in the early 2020 after few month of jamming
together.

THE NWOTHM: Can you tell us more about your musical backgrounds?

R.H: Whole 80s scene, from hard rock to death metal, but classic heavy metal has a very
special place in our hearts.

THE NWOTHM: What is the metal scene like in your hometown and in Poland in general?

R.H: Metal scene in Poland has always been mostly extreme, we have lots of very
interesting, high quality black and death metal bands, Underground as well as some
world-known acts like Behemoth or Vader. As a traditional metal fan i must add, that we have really cool oldschool  underground scene. Shout out to Axe Crazy, Armagh, Black Hosts, Sexmag, Gallower, Aquilla, Pandemic, R.I.P., Nightbound, Wielki Mrok, Crossroad or Rosary, all great bands for real oldschool Headbangers.

THE NWOTHM: What are your favourite instruments in your collections? Do you have a go to brand?

R.H:I’m afraid non of us is a instrument collector, but Maciek has a pretty cool collection
of Boss analogue guitar effects.

THE NWOTHM: Sources say you guys formed around 2012 but did not release your first full length until 2015? What was the first few years like for the band?

R.H:We had a demo release in 2013, 3 songs, 2 of them were later rerecorded on our
debut album, we played our first gigs and gained some experience, usual stuff for a
new band I would say.

THE NWOTHM: Can you tell us an interesting fact about each of yourselves?
We all are huge Britney Spears fans!

THENWOTHM: If you could have a beer with any musician who would it be and why?

R.H: I would drink beer with anyone, I simply like drinking beer!

THE NWOTHM: Your debut debut full length album ‘Dreamstealer’ came out in 2015! Tell us more about the background of the album and the writing and recording process!

R.H:All songs were written by Przemek, then rehearsed and recorded in Cracow. Mixing
and mastering process was done in Sweden by Olof Wikstrand who has done
excellent work.

THE NWOTHM: Can you each tell us what you favourite track of the album is?

R.H: My personal favourite is Taste Your Sin.

THENWOTHM: Do you each have a favourite movie of all time that you have watched over and over?

R.H: Peter Jackson’s Lord Of The Rings trilogy for me, no doubt. I rewatch director’s cuts
every year

THE NWOTHM: You unleashed an EP by the name of ‘(Don’t) Follow Them’ back in 2016. What was the inspiration for that release?

R.H:That was a special release that came out as a bonus to an issue of Heavy Metal
Maniac zine, published by our friend Leszek Wojnicz-Sianożęcki. There are two
cover songs and one from The Oppressors that came out a year later. Limited release that appears to be some kind of rare one when you search the discogs
database

THENWOTHM: The artwork is pretty epic? Who created it for you?

R.H:It truly is, I cannot disagree. It was created by Claudio Bergamin, the guy that did the cover art for Judas Priests’ last album Firepower.

THE NWOTHM: Gates of Madness was released last year! Can you tell us more about your most recent release?

R.H: Gates To Madness is a very special release for us, it marks 10 years of the band’s
existence. As always, whole album was composed by Przemek Murzyn, he is also an
author of all the lyrics, that are more emotional and dark this time. It is also first
album with me behind the drums, so it’s very important release for me personally.
First time ever, we decided to do recording, mixing and mastering in one single studio
in Poland, and it appears to be best decision we could make, album sounds amazing,
we achieved 100% of what we wanted it to sound like.

THE NWOTHM: How would you say your music has evolved since the early days of the band?

R.H: Evolution can clearly be heard on every our album. Roadhog started as a true-to-the core NWOTHM band, first album sounded raw and oldschool, was much more riff-
oriented and in some way you can hear the anger and rebel attitude through this one.
The second album, although fast and riff-oriented as well, has more atmosphere, you
can hear first signs of that epic flavor that are more hearable on Gates to Madness.
And finally our latest album, definitely our best piece, has most complex compositions
and epic moments, Be Careful What You Wish For, to mention just one. Beside that,
we never forgot about our roots, there are heavier or faster songs, but everything is
better composed and works as a whole piece perfectly.

THENWOTHM: The trad music movement has changed massively since the early 2000s. What are your thoughts on its evolution?

R.H: Yeah, traditional metal is much more popular nowadays, there are lots of great
bands, they release albums, they tour, it isn’t that hard to play or listen to traditional
metal as it was 20 years ago. Lets hope it won’t change.
