AN INTERVIEW WITH DEADWOLFF (CANADA)

New comers Deadwolff are tearing up Canada with their ferocious take on heavy metal and are gearing up to release their debut album with Golden Robot Records! Check out what they had to say about their formation and more in this new interview!

THE NWOTHM: Hey Deadwolff thanks for agreeing to this interview! Can you start by telling our readers where you are from and can you introduce us to the band members?

Tommy D.W: Thanks for interviewing us! We’re based out of Toronto, in Canada. Deadwolff is Tommy Wolffe, on Bass and vocals. Bobby Deuce, on guitar, and Angus Pike on the drums.

THE NWOTHM: You guys have only been around a few years! How did the band form and is there any insightful story surrounding its formation?

Tommy D.W: This band was an idea I had toyed with for about a year. I knew I wanted to put together a heavy sounding three-piece band, so it was just a matter of finding the right people. After I had figured out a name and what tunes I wanted to play, I began writing songs and had this vision of coming out swinging. I began looking for guitarists capable of writing guitar riffs to the tunes I had. Bobby ended up diggin what I was layin down and quickly began writing guitar parts. Really slapped some meat on the bones, ya know? Once we had 5 songs put together we got right to recording, cut an EP, and began reaching out to labels. Not long after, we hooked up with Angus and began touring.

THE NWOTHM: Where did the band name Deadwolff come from?

Tommy D.W: I thought of it while I was driving home from work one day!

THE NWOTHM: Your logo is awesome! How did you come up with the idea and who created it?

Tommy D.W: Thanks so much eh! Stoked you dig it. I had pretty much decided I wanted to use some sort of “dead wolf” imagery, due to the name obviously, So with that in mind, knowing I wanted yellow and triangles in there, along with this similar font I had seen somewhere before, I shot the ideas over to my buddy Jerry and we cooked this up.

THE NWOTHM: What has it been like working with some great labels since your formation?

Bobby D.W: Well so far the labels we have worked with have been great. Boonsdale, Metal Assault and now Golden Robot have been nothing but amazing. Having a good team of people has made things a lot easier for us to get things done.

THE NWOTHM: As a band who would you say your biggest influences have been? This is can be either musically or outside of music?

Bobby D.W: Our influences vary but for sure there are bands like Judas Priest, Triumph, Tank and Motorhead. There are many more but those are some major ones.

THE NWOTHM: What’s your thoughts on the current trad metal scene in comparison to how it was 10 years ago?

Angus D.W: Solid question, I wasn’t involved in the TO scene at the time because I was 15, but I was certainly aware of it. There were bands coming out at that time who are currently still “active” or some that I would say is maybe an unknown status or have broken up. As of world wide, I think the trad metal or what I like to say “modern
heavy metal” scene around the globe defiantly is still booming since that type of metal has made a comeback. You can find so many great heavy metal groups everywhere in that 80s vein. Bands like Demon Bitch, Livewire, Stallion, Riot City and Rebel Priest who we had a chance to hit the road with, are great examples of bands who are keeping that particular scene alive today. I think it’s still solid and vibing just as
hard as what it was a decade ago, maybe even more so.

THE NWOTHM: If you could play with any band or musician, dead or alive who would it be and why?

Bobby D.W: I guess that would probably be different for each of us but myself personally I would love to jam out with George Lynch. He’s always been one of my favourite guitar players.

THE NWOTHM: What is the Nwothm scene like in Toronto? Is there any other bands from your area that you would tell me to check out?

Angus D.W: I think TO has had such a big impact on the “trad” metal wave. I personally think it really put that heavy metal style back on the map for the fans of the early 80s English stuff (NWOBHM) and the other great heavy/speed bands that were coming out in metals heyday. As of now, I mentioned before from the last question I think it’s having a bit of a slumber. 10 years ago you could find bands like Cauldron, Axxion, Midnight Malice and Manacle among a few others being heavily active and personally I think the pandemic kinda forced it to have a bit of a sleep. You’ll find guys in those groups doing other various projects like Jason Decay from Cauldron for example, doing a new group Lockhart which is AOR style of rock n roll. The fans are still active too keeping it alive of course, but as far as bands from the TO scene to check out aside from the big guys like
Skull Fist and Cauldron, there’s also Villain and Thunderor I would recommend from here.

THE NWOTHM: Touring is a massive part of life for any band or artist! Do you have any interesting stories from being on the road so far?

Angus D.W: I think that’s one of the most fun things about tour is the interesting stories, there’s so many. I think the most interesting one was we ended up playing this town in BC which was in Squamish and not one person knew anything about the venue we were playing at. Turns out this venue was a Mexican food joint that was converted from an old KFC. I’ll never forget playing in the corner of this converted fast food joint with a crowd
of people in this thing, it was the most interesting, memorable venue playing at. All you need is to picture at least a hundred people just rocking it in a McDonald’s and that paints the picture.

THE NWOTHM: What gives you inspiration for your lyrics?

Tommy D.W: The lyrics are just life, ya know? The ups, the downs, the fun and everything in between. Like to keep it pretty relatable.

THE NWOTHM: Can you tell us about your most recent release and any background information to the music? How did the songs come about?

Tommy D.W: Well our most recent release was our latest single, Homeward bound. It’s a song revolving around trauma. Having to fight to prove you’re worth to fit it. That old tune. As for our upcoming release, we’ll have a 10 track album coming out on Golden Robot Records, that we worked very hard on and are super proud of how the songs all came together. Some are re recorded from the EP, but the rest are all new tunes that we can’t wait for people to check out.

THE NWOTHM: Where did the idea for the ‘Heavy Rock N Roll’ music video come from?

Tommy D.W: Well we needed a place to shoot, And wanted a cool looking spot. I knew of this abandoned Marina, so we went out on a limb and brought our gear there and it worked out quite well!

THE NWOTHM: You have a new single coming out on March 6th titled ‘Walking on Nails.’ What is the song about?

Tommy D.W: Walking on nails is a tune about fast love and city nights.

THE NWOTHM: What shows have you got coming up for 2023? Will we see any big touring plans for this year?

Tommy D.W: We’ve got some bigger tours planned that aren’t announced just yet, but they’re gonna be a hell of a lot of fun in a hell of a lot of cities!

THE NWOTHM: What can you tell us about your upcoming debut album via Golden Robot Records?

Bobby D.W: We’ve released a few singles so far so you can get a taste from those but there are some great new tracks on there. All bangers that we think everyone will like. We’ll have some more new on that real soon.

THE NWOTHM: Where can people check you out on social media and buy your music/merch?

Tommy D.W: The tunes are up on all major platforms, so which ever one you use.
We unfortunately don’t have any merch up on Bandcamp as of yet. It’s been one of those things. We get back from tour and need to re up on merch, but then we’re back on tour, so we just haven’t had the inventory really, but sooner than later as I’ve been telling people. Sooner than later.

THE NWOTHM: is there anything else you would like to mention?

DW: Stay tuned because we’ve got some exciting stuff coming up this year!
