REVIEW: TELOMYRAS (SELF TITLED)

Telomyras has unleashed their self-titled introduction to the metal world. It’s a 5 song EP that draws heavily from the classic sounds and stylings of power, thrash, and progressive metal. At the center of it all is a strong foundation of traditional heavy metal. Here is the track list:

1. Cambion

2. Colorless

3. First Blood

4. Hydra

5. Throne of Ruin

Let’s introduce the band: Sammie Gorham (vocals), Travis Busby (drums), Eric Thomas (bass), Ephraim Grimm (guitar), Jack Schonher (guitar). Relevant credits for the album include: All songs written and arranged by Telomyras, recorded at Hanger 12 Studios (August of 2022), engineered and mixed by Cody Brumlow, band logo by Erich Lough, album artwork by Sam Haglund.

Review:

A quick and clear observation is that the band is a talented group. They have clearly put the time in to hone their craft musically. The sound of the record is clear and crisp. There is a solid balance of each instrument being present in the mix. I was able to pick up some nice touches in each of the songs that show level of production quality that went into the making of this record.

This is a strong offering by the band and establishes their territory on the TNWOTHM landscape. There are many positive aspects to celebrate and just a few things to note as opportunities. Against a backdrop of strong musicianship, good lyrics, and promising vocals it’s clear that there is room to mature. For a band at this stage, this is normal and expected. I’m left with a feeling of promise and excited to see what happens next for Telomyras!

Let’s dive into the tracks!

Cambion – A burly opening track that gets off to a fast start with a driving riff and bass combo. There are some choice leads on this track that serve as a contrast to the driving heart that races along. The second half of the song hits another gear and shows what the band is capable of. Props to the vocalist for nailing a wicked death metal growl.

Colorless – This is a crunchy metal track that gives way to some excellent progressive vibes. I get a strong sense of early Queensryche and/or Somewhere in Time era Iron Maiden in having influenced the music of the song. On vocals, she carves her own path and uses the strengths of her voice to round out the song.

First Blood – This opens with a somber, melodic interlude. Then, they heroically rise into what has all the makings of a power metal anthem. There is strong imagery in the lyrics, and yet another growl in the vocal. The band is flexing their muscles on this tune, and it’s one of the strongest tracks.

Hydra – This is a fantastic classic metal tune. There are images of dark delves, dangerous beasts, treasure, and dreams of heroic deeds. The soaring solos and powerful vocals that make this one a solid track.

Throne of Ruin – Hands down the best track on the EP as it showcases everything that this band is and can be. Against a galloping backbone, there are riffs and hooks that really stand out. To me, this is one of the strongest tracks from a lyrical perspective. In addition, this is great example of what the vocalist is capable of. Seriously… nailed it!

Wrapping Up:

Telomyras is here to carry the flag of the New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal forward into battle. Their self-titled EP shows an incredible amount of talent and potential. They weave songs together that effortlessly flow across multiple genres of metal. Clearly, there is more NWOTHM goodness that is yet to come from this band. As they grow into their prime, they will certainly find ways to strengthen their talents and zero in on opportunities. It is going to be incredible to see how their vocalist evolves and grows, as there is a rich foundation to build upon the performance on this EP. I hope this band goes on tour and gives fans a chance to see how they bring this recording to life on stage. This is worth investing the time to listen and throwing plenty of support their way. Show us what you got, Telomyras!
