I caught up with Lander Savelkoul of Belgium’s Speed Queen to get a snapshot of the band and what they have got planned for the start of 2023!

Get ready for a heavy metal attack! Speed Queen from Belgium plays high speed, energetic, bitchin’ heavy metal. Call it whatever you want: ‘80s revival, new wave of Belgian heavy metal or just straight up rock ‘n roll… Our amps go to eleven! So grab your leather jacket and put on your sister’s jeans, ‘cause that’s heavy metal, if you know what I mean!

THE NWOTHM: For those who do not know who you are, can you tell us your band name, who is
in the band and where you are from?
We’re Speed Queen from Belgium. There’s four of us, all with a (not so) healthy passion for heavy
metal.
THE NWOTHM: How did the band form and is there any interesting story surrounding its
formation?
We met in a bar, it clicked and we started making music. Simple as that. Sometimes that’s all you
need! We even wrote a song about that bar, “Church Avenue”.
THE NWOTHM: Since the bands formation what big milestones have you achieved?
Playing Wacken Open Air was definitely a big one, though our favourite show ever was at
Headbangers Open Air. We played at noon but the place was packed and wild! But I guess, after
the whole COVID-lockdown I consider every show a milestone. You can’t imagine how happy we
were to be able to perform again.
THE NWOTHM: Can you tell us any fun/ interesting facts about the members of the band?
Our drummer is the proud owner of what you could call an animal farm. From lizards to sheep, he
has it all. No yellow goat though.
THE NWOTHM: What bands and artists have influenced you and helped you to carve your sound?
If we’re talking about the classics, I’d say bands like Judas Priest, MC5, W.A.S.P., etc. We all
started there and rolled with it. But really, we all listen to – and get influenced by – a variety of stuff,
I’m currently deep down the Krautrock hole.
THE NWOTHM: What shows have you got coming up for 2023? Any major performances you
would like to highlight?
We have a 2-day tour coming up in Germany soon. We’ll be playing in Hamburg and Berlin. That
should be great! Playing in Germany always hits different (shoutout to the Bambi Galore, our
favorite place there).
17/02/2023: R-EVOLUTION OF STEEL rocks Berlin IV
18/02/2023: R-EVOLUTION OF STEEL rocks Hamburg VIII
THE NWOTHM: Any other plans for 2023? With it being a new year, what do you hope to achieve
in the upcoming months?
Play some shows, then play some more. If there’s any left, play those too. But really, we’re also
working on some new music!
THE NWOTHM: Where can people check you out on social media and buy your music/merch?
Just come to our shows and support rock ‘n roll. If you can’t do that due to some made-up reason,
here you go:

THE NWOTHM: is there anything else you would like to mention?
If you buy a new amplifier, make sure to check it they go to eleven. If they don’t, make ten louder.
